IMOGENE PASS 4×4 Tour

On Top of the World!

Imogene Pass is one of the highest, most celebrated passes in Colorado. More than just a Jeep trail, Imogene Pass sports its own adventure run in the late summer of each year, starting in downtown Ouray Colorado. A narrow and rugged 4×4 trail that climbs to over 13,000 feet, Imogene Pass connected the mining districts between Ouray and Telluride in the 1800’s. Today, it provides some of the most stunning ‘top of the world’ views and interesting mining history, as well as the opportunity to see vintage mining structures, waterfalls and often, the most colorful Columbines in the San Juan Mountains! This is a popular trail, so AM departures often provide the best experience. Afternoon tours are offered by Private Jeep Safari.

For the 2024 season we will offer our IMO tour as a 5hr tour on Wed/Fri/Sat/Sun with 8:00 AM departures only.    If you are still interested in a tour but not available on these days please consider a Private Jeep Safari.

Trip Details & Logistics

imogene pass

Depart from Ouray, Colorado. Cross Box Canyon Gorge and the headwaters to the Ouray Hot Springs, then ride up through impressive canyon walls silhouetting Canyon Creek to the lower historic district of Camp Bird Mine. Make your way through several ‘circa 1902’ mining homes to scale a narrow shelf road carved into the side of a steep precipice that ascends to the entrance of Imogene Basin. Reach the site of the Yellow Rose mine and impressive waterfall. Then, climb above tree-line into the ghost town area of the original Camp Bird, a major source of gold and silver wealth in the 1800’s. Summit Imogene Pass at over 13,100 feet, and experience panoramic views of distant high mountain peaks and the town of Telluride. On the return trip, enjoy a historic narrative of the infamous Ft. Peabody and views of Ptarmigan lake. An exciting and rugged trip for adventure enthusiasts! Generally available from July 5th – September 15th. Inquire thereafter. Please visit our trail conditions page for updates as the season progresses.

“Crazy climb to an incredible summit! We couldn’t imagine how the miners lived up there all year. The wildflowers were everywhere and we counted at least a half dozen whistle-pigs. Thanks for the adventure!”
